Shopify, WordPress or Etsy: Where Should You Sell?

Choosing where to sell is one of the first decisions in online business, and a wrong choice costs months. The right platform depends less on features and more on your product, your budget, your technical comfort and how much time you want to spend on maintenance.

The short version

  • Etsy: best for handmade, gift and personalized niche products, especially when you are starting and want shoppers who already come to buy such items.
  • Shopify: best if you want a ready-made system and fewer technical problems.
  • WordPress with WooCommerce: best if you have little or no revenue yet, some technical comfort, and want control and low upfront cost.

Prices and fees change, so check each platform's current pricing before deciding. For Etsy, the standard 2026 US costs are a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing, with extra fees on Offsite Ads sales.

When Etsy is the right choice

Etsy is hard to beat for handmade items, personalized gifts and niche products, because people open Etsy looking for exactly that. You skip building a store, a payment system and a first audience. The trade-offs are fees, competition on every search, rules you must follow (including AI disclosure), and a customer relationship that largely belongs to Etsy.

Typical problem it solves: "I have a product and no audience, and I do not want to spend months building a website first."

When Shopify is the right choice

Shopify suits owners who want a polished store with the technical side handled: hosting, security, checkout and updates are part of the service. It fits sellers who want to reduce the time spent on problems, plan to run paid ads or social campaigns, and want a brand site they own.

Typical problem it solves: "I want a professional store that just works, and I would rather pay monthly than fix things myself."

Watch for: monthly cost that grows with apps, and the need to bring your own traffic.

When WordPress is the right choice

WordPress with WooCommerce suits people who are just starting with little or no revenue, have some technical knowledge or the patience to learn, and want low upfront cost and full control. It is also strong for content and SEO, because a blog and store live on the same site.

Typical problem it solves: "I want to start cheap, own everything and grow content and search traffic."

Watch for: you are responsible for hosting, updates, plugin conflicts, backups and security. Cheap at the start can become expensive if something breaks and you need a developer.

You do not have to choose only one

A common path is to start on Etsy to test products and learn what buyers want, then build a Shopify or WordPress site to own the customer relationship, collect emails and reduce reliance on one marketplace. Selling on several channels works well once your listings and stock are organized, but each channel adds work, so add them in order.

Five questions to decide

  1. Is your product handmade, personalized or giftable?
  2. Do you already have an audience, or do you need to find one?
  3. How comfortable are you with technical tasks?
  4. How much monthly cost and how much time can you commit?
  5. Do you want to own the brand and customer list from day one?

If you answered "yes, I need an audience, and low effort", start with Etsy. If you answered "I want a reliable branded store", look at Shopify. If you answered "little money, some skills, long game", consider WordPress.
