Why a new listing gets views and then goes quiet
New listings get a small, temporary boost in search so Etsy can learn how shoppers react to them. After that, Etsy looks at clicks, favorites and purchases to decide how appealing the listing is. A listing that gets seen but not clicked or bought slowly moves down.
This is why the early views are not proof that the listing is good, and the drop is not proof that Etsy is punishing you. The rules below are about making sure the listing earns its position once the boost ends.
The 10 rules
1. Open the Search Visibility page first
In Shop Manager, the search visibility page shows how your shop, listings and customer service quality perform in the areas that feed search, with suggested actions. It is also available in the Etsy Seller app. Start here, because it tells you which listings Etsy already considers weak.
2. Treat customer service as a ranking factor
Etsy prioritizes shops that follow its customer service standards, and it looks at your average review rating, message response rate and case rate over the past three months. Slow replies and unresolved problems cost visibility, not just goodwill. Replying within 48 hours to first messages is part of the standard, and Star Seller asks for faster.
3. Use all 13 tags, written like real searches
Every unused tag is a missed chance to match a search. Use multi-word phrases and natural language. Etsy's rule of thumb: if you cannot imagine someone typing the phrase into Google, it does not belong in your tags. Mix what the item is, how it is made and who it is for.
4. Fill in every attribute
Attributes such as color, material, occasion, holiday, height and width work like extra tags and feed the filters shoppers use. Choose the most specific category you can, because that unlocks more specific attributes. If a phrase is already in an attribute, you do not need to repeat it as a tag.
5. Write short titles that can be scanned in a second
Shoppers see only the first few words of a title in search results. Name the item first, then the traits that matter, and move the rest into tags, attributes and the description. The order of words does not change ranking directly, but a clear title earns more clicks, and clicks improve ranking over time. Etsy also offers AI title suggestions in the search visibility dashboard for eligible English listings, which are worth reviewing but not accepting blindly.
6. Make the first photo a clean thumbnail
The first photo is what appears in search. It should show the item clearly, with no text overlay, collage or "your text here" placeholder. Etsy says a first photo smaller than 635 pixels on either side can show up lower in search and recommends at least 2000 pixels. More on this in my guide to product photos that sell.
7. Watch shipping price
For US domestic listings, Etsy prioritizes listings with shipping under $6 in search, with some exceptions. Etsy's data also shows that moving part of the shipping cost into the item price, while keeping the total the same, can improve sales. Check what the rule is for your market, since it can change.
8. Add clear shop policies
Having shop policies has a positive effect on search placement, and Etsy's policy template can add a further boost. Missing policies are one of the quickest quality issues to fix.
9. Write titles and tags in your shop language
Tags in a language other than your shop language will not help your listings appear in search. Etsy translates titles and tags into the shopper's language automatically, so write in the language you set up the shop with.
10. Do not set it and forget it
Look at your stats regularly, refresh tags and titles on weak listings, and review keywords at the start of each season or before a major holiday. Etsy's own advice is to scan your listings for repeated tag phrases and swap in new ones.
A quick self-check
If you can answer yes to all of these, your basics are covered: every listing has 13 tags and complete attributes, the first photo is a clean thumbnail, shipping is not far above what buyers expect, policies are filled in, and you reply to messages the same day.
What if you do all ten and still get little traffic?
Then the problem is usually not visibility but whether shoppers who do see the listing want it. That is a conversion problem, and it is covered in Etsy views but no sales. Search and conversion feed each other, so it helps to fix them together.
