How to Find What Buyers Really Search for on Etsy

If you sell personalized products, your product name and the buyer's search phrase are often different. You may call it a "keepsake box". A buyer may type "personalized wedding memory box" or "wooden box with name". Marketplace Insights shows you which words buyers actually use.

What Marketplace Insights gives you

It shows Etsy search data, including the number of searches and listings from the last 30 days, related terms and trends. Etsy says sellers can explore up to 15 keyword searches per week for free, and Etsy Plus subscribers can search without that limit. Find it in Shop Manager > Stats > Marketplace Insights.

A five-step research session

  1. Start with the buyer's problem or occasion, in plain language: "wedding welcome box", "engraved gift for dad", "custom anniversary box".
  2. Look at related terms and write down the phrases that truly describe your product. High search interest with fewer competing listings can suggest an opportunity, but it is a clue, not a sales forecast.
  3. Open real search results for the promising terms. Check what buyers would expect from the photos, materials, size, price and delivery time.
  4. Choose one primary phrase per listing and use accurate related language across the title, tags, attributes and description. Etsy says these fields help match a listing to a query.
  5. Check your own Etsy Stats after the change. Watch which searches bring visits and which visits become orders. Market demand is useful, but your conversion and profit show whether the idea works in your shop.

Traps to avoid

  • Misdescribing the product. Do not use a popular phrase for something it is not. Etsy warns that Marketplace Insights shows searches even for things that are not allowed on Etsy, and sellers remain responsible for compliant listings.
  • Treating 30 days as the whole year. For gifts and occasions, compare other sources such as eRank and Google Trends, and keep the source label on every number.
  • Keyword stuffing. Etsy now favors clear, readable titles. See 10 search rules that matter.
