The useful way to think about it
Make the product easy to identify, compare and verify. The missing capacity, care instruction, color and dispatch details matter more than a clever paragraph about "elevating everyday rituals". No company promises that filling every field will put your product in an answer.
What Google AI Mode uses
Google says shopping in AI Mode combines its AI models with the Shopping Graph. In November 2025 Google reported more than 50 billion product listings, with 2 billion updated every hour. Those are Google's own figures at that date.
For a merchant the work is familiar: keep product pages accessible, use clear titles and descriptions, submit accurate price and availability, and keep your website and feed in agreement. Google says its AI features need no extra technical requirements beyond normal SEO, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Good data makes your store understandable. It does not create guaranteed placement.
What "Etsy in ChatGPT" means
There are two separate experiences. Etsy announced a ChatGPT shopping integration in 2025 that lets eligible US shoppers discover and, for some items, buy Etsy products in ChatGPT. In May 2026, Etsy announced a beta Etsy app in ChatGPT, where a shopper can tag @Etsy, describe what they want and view relevant listings in the conversation. These are Etsy's own descriptions of its integrations, and not every listing will appear for every prompt.
Etsy's seller FAQ says eligible US sellers opted in to Offsite Ads may have listings included in the checkout experience. Check Etsy's current eligibility rather than assuming you need your own product-feed account with OpenAI. Your listing details still matter: Etsy says attributes such as color, material, size and dimensions help an item match searches, so fill in only those that truly apply.
What about your own store and ChatGPT?
OpenAI's product feed program for ChatGPT is currently available to approved partners, and its specification says eligibility does not guarantee display. A product can be absent because it is unavailable in that experience, the data does not match the request, the feed is stale or invalid, or other selection factors apply. This is a list of possible reasons, not a ranking formula. Also, AI answers can be wrong: OpenAI advises merchants to use factual descriptions and keep variant-specific titles, prices, availability, images and URLs aligned.
Make the product understandable first
A title such as "The Sunday Ritual" sounds like a collection name. "Hand-thrown blue ceramic mug, 350 mL" tells people and product systems far more. (That is an example, not a ranking formula.) For each product, answer what a buyer would ask before paying:
- What is it, and what makes this version different?
- What are the size, material, color and included pieces?
- Which options are separate variants, and do their photos and prices match?
- Is it in stock or made to order?
- What are the handling time, shipping destinations and return terms?
The basic fields in OpenAI's feed specification are an item ID, title, factual description, product URL, brand, seller name, image URL, availability and price. Google's Merchant Center defines its own attributes, so do not assume a feed made for one service works unchanged on another.
How to measure it
Fix a small group of products first and record what you changed. Then watch Search Console, Merchant Center diagnostics and your store analytics. Google introduced a Generative AI performance report in Search Console in June 2026. Do not treat one test prompt as a ranking report, because results vary with wording, location and inventory. What you control is the quality and consistency of the product record. Next: product page SEO for WooCommerce and Shopify.
