A three-column calculator for Etsy, Amazon and Shopify. The figures inside are illustrative sample inputs, not published platform fees. Replace them with your own order and billing data.
Download the CalculatorThe core calculation
Collected revenue = (unit price x units) + shipping charged - discount
Contribution profit = collected revenue - product cost - labor - packaging
- fulfillment - platform fees - payment fees - ads
- returns allowance - other variable costs
Profit after overhead = contribution profit
- (monthly channel costs / expected monthly orders)
Contribution profit is what is left from one order before monthly costs. The second result spreads those monthly costs across your expected orders. It is an estimate and changes if real volume differs from your forecast. Add taxes, duties, currency conversion and unusual returns where they matter to you.
How to use it properly
- Compare the same product and order size in the same currency in all three columns.
- Use real fee records, not guesses. Etsy's Payment account shows sales, fees, marketing, shipping-label purchases and refunds, and keeps monthly statements of all activity. Amazon says referral fees vary by category and offers a revenue calculator, and FBA can add fulfillment and storage costs. Shopify bills can include subscriptions, apps and transaction fees, and a third-party payment provider can add both Shopify's fee and its own processing fee.
- Do not put a whole monthly subscription into one order's cost. Divide it by a realistic order count, then try a lower-volume scenario. A channel that looks excellent at 200 orders a month may be poor at 20.
- Remember what each channel gives you. Marketplaces bring their own shoppers, and a standalone store may require you to pay to attract them.
What the sample shows (illustrative only)
With sample inputs for a $50 item plus $8 shipping, the workbook gives these per-order results. They are examples of how the math works, not benchmarks for any platform.
| Etsy | Amazon | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collected revenue | $58 | $58 | $58 |
| Contribution profit | $17 | $12 | $17 |
| Profit after monthly costs | $16.50 | $11 | $15.50 |
The point is the method: change one input, such as ad cost or order volume, and watch the ranking change. For the bigger decision, read Shopify, WordPress or Etsy: where should you sell? and selling on Amazon and Etsy at the same time.
