Etsy Unedited Photo Rule: What Changed on Nov 6

On November 6, Etsy clarified how its new unedited-photo rule works after seller questions. The short version: the unedited photo can be cropped, it does not have to be your first image, and one is enough per listing. Lighting adjustments still do not count.

What Etsy clarified

  • Your first listing image does not need to be the unedited photo.
  • The unedited photo can now be cropped.
  • You can also add a watermark, change the file format or resize it.
  • You only need one unedited photo per listing, even when the listing has several variations.

If you make any of these allowed changes, do not use AI-powered tools to do it. Otherwise Etsy's systems may flag your photo as AI-edited. Read the updated Listing Image Requirements.

Why lighting adjustments are still out

Etsy says lighting can make a big difference, but buyers tell it that it is getting harder to see which listings use AI-generated content, and that this uncertainty is now a top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy. Some photo editing tools also use AI, and that is not always obvious. Keeping one photo completely unedited gives buyers a more accurate view of the item and helps Etsy spot misleading AI-generated or AI-edited images.

Which photo goes where

You can still lead with the photo that shows your item best and edit your other listing photos, as long as they accurately represent what the buyer will receive. The unedited photo can sit anywhere in the listing. Videos do not count toward the requirement: they show an item in action, but a photo gives buyers a clear still view of the details.

Deadlines and refund risk

Etsy encourages you to review your listing images as soon as possible. If a buyer opens a case because the item they received is materially different from your listing, you may be responsible for refunding them when the listing does not meet the updated image requirements.

Etsy also plans to begin proactively enforcing these requirements in early 2027 and says it will give advance notice before enforcement starts.

What else Etsy announced

  • Guidance when sellers add listing photos.
  • Tools to identify misleading images and fraudulent listings.
  • A new reporting option so members can flag listings they believe use AI imagery in a misleading way. At first, reports help Etsy understand concerns and will not trigger immediate enforcement.
  • More ways to give buyers context about AI use, which Etsy says it will explore.

The earlier restrictions remain: no bot-generated listings and no AI-generated functional guides such as patterns, recipes and instructions. See the original guide to Etsy's AI and photo rules.

Terms of Use and Privacy Policy: a separate topic

Etsy's recent Terms of Use and Privacy Policy updates let it use member-generated content to improve the AI models behind its marketplace: tools that make running a shop easier, more relevant shopping experiences and fraud detection. Etsy says the new image requirements serve a different purpose and were not introduced to train AI models.

Your next step

  1. For each listing, pick one real photo of the item and keep it unedited. You may crop or resize it, but do not use AI-powered tools on it.
  2. Check that your edited photos still show exactly what the buyer will receive.
  3. Start with your most-viewed listings, then work through the rest before enforcement begins in early 2027.
